Organic gardening has become very popular, especially growing organic vegetables. After all, we all like to eat chemical-free veggies. A lot of vegetables are fairly easy to grow but there are some you should avoid if you are a beginner. Here is a short introduction to how to grow organic vegetables.

It can be tempting to try to grow as much vegetables as possible but if you are a beginner, it is best to start small. Select a sunny spot, most vegetables want a lot of sun. By selecting disease resistant plants you make your life easier. But still make sure that you are growing vegetables you like to eat. Don’t worry if you don’t have perfect conditions, very few have but they still grow fine vegetables.

When planning your vegetables garden, make sure that you can rotate vegetables every season. You want to keep the soil well balanced, this has been done for ages by rotating crops. Note that crop rotation can also be used to control weeds. Some vegetables produce foliage that suppresses weeds. Note that three years is the recommended minimum for crop rotation. Some vegetables are not only delicious to eat, they also look good. This means you can grow them without making a separate vegetable area in your garden.

Growing organic vegetables follows very much the same guidelines as standard vegetables. Make sure that you select vegetables suitable for your conditions. Vegetables are divided into warm-season and cold-season vegetables. You also need to plant them at the right time. In colder climates, you may need to sow the seeds indoors first and then move them outside once the last frost date is passed.

Nowadays, you can buy organic seeds. But you can also buy transplants that have been produced organically. If you are serious about organic vegetables, make sure that you buy organic seeds from a reputable source.

Depending on your soil and what vegetables you are growing, you may need to apply fertilizer. Some vegetables, for example radishes and peas, need very little fertilizer. Other, such as broccoli and tomatoes, often need fertilizer to grow big. Note that it is possible to apply too much organic fertilizers. If you have a healthy soil, it is best to be very budget-minded with fertilizer. A lot of vegetables will perform reasonably in good soil, also without fertilizer.

In most cases, water is much more important than fertilizer for vegetables. If you want to get big healthy vegetables, you must make sure that your plants get enough water when the vegetables are ripening. The best way is to apply water directly to the soil, rather than using a garden hose. This wastes less water and minimizes the risk of diseases. Although your vegetables need water early in the season, be careful not to overwater the small plants.

One of most important things in organic gardening is to keep your vegetables healthy. Inspecting plants daily for diseases and pests is very important. The earlier you detect problems, the easier it will be to get rid of them.
